Great Podcasts for Improving English
Podcast recommendation
As podcasts are getting more and more popular, some English learners may intend to perfectionate their skills with the help of podcast listening.
Not a long ago did I come across Luke’s English Podcast, which is thought to be exemplary for some reasons.
Firstly, its content is enjoyable since Teacher Luke covers diverse topics such as films, sport events, politics, teaching experience, methods, learning strategies, British comedy, and interviews with intriguing people, some rambling about different issues, etc... the list is almost endless. So everybody can find some material which interests them. This podcast is definitely brilliant because of the length of each episode is generally slightly more than one hour, which I think is considerable and pretty good for improving your English. The more access you get to the language itself the more you will acquire.
Secondly, the podcaster is a DELTA qualified native English teacher who is really committed to teaching. He puts a lot of effort into podcasting, therefore, I do really think that it is worth listening to him regularly. His voice is pleasant sounding, his accent is British; the language he uses is genuinely authentic. So if you are interested, you can get access to his podcasts for absolutely free of charge.
I also have another favourite called No such thing as a fish. In spite of the fact that it is more demanding to listen to it since the episodes of it were basically created for native English speakers, the content is absolutely entertaining. Three presenters tell an extremely surprising or impressive fact, and they start talking about it in a casual, humorous way. Wikipedia says Since the launch of the podcast it has attracted 700,000 subscribers. In 2014 No Such Thing as a Fish was named by Apple as the "Best New Podcast" that year. In 2015 and 2016 it won the "Internet Award" in the Chortle Awards.
If you have just a little time to listen to something for basically language purposes, why don’t you opt for BBC 6-minute-English? The quality of the episodes is really high, the presenters try to teach you some new vocabulary items in context. It is true that the podcasters use a transcript and they read it out, so the whole podcast does not sound too authentic, but still worth listening.
My Polish friend suggested that I should also check a podcast carried out by a non-native English teacher called Zdenek from the Czech Republic (Zdenek’s English Podcast). He seems to be really devoted to the language. He originally created his podcasts so as to challenge himself to reach C2 level, and over the years his work has gained some considerable popularity.
