Practical Everyday English- Lesson 2

I have recently come across a good book titled as Practical Everyday English by Steven Collins, which wants to make the advanced student memorise new expressions. In order to do so, I have decided to write a short story with most of the phrases that every single lesson contains. Hopefully, this task will function as a mnemonic.

 Family matters

As for me, I have a little daughter who likes to be made a fuss of her; she takes after my husband in that respect, I guess. As she is only 15 months old, she has just started to walk. She falls if she treads on one of her toys, so she can’t walk so steadily yet. But I bet she will be able to run much quicker than we do soon.

Anyway, he is pretty selfless and is fond of helping others. Most of the time, he is also jovial and it is so much fun to be with him. He is keen on being with his family, so he looks forward to having some days off from work. He is not pompous at all, he doesn’t like showing off the things that he has. He doesn’t enjoy the company of snobbish people who are big-headed and tend to speak in a posh way all the time. Admittedly, I don’t like them either. However, sometimes he is a bit idle and he tends to be reluctant to do certain important things around the house like fixing broken items, etc. Occasionally, it disturbs me as we can’t afford to employ a handyman all the time, and I like if everything works smoothly in our flat. I think he would never own up to this negative personal trait. But there is nothing wrong with it. After all, it is not a turn-up for the books that everybody has mistakes.

Once a month we ask my mother-in-law and my father-in-law round. They usually don’t turn us down and come over to us. Needless to say, they are really caring grandparents and are curious about their grandchild. As they live in a very tiny village where there is not so much going on, they enjoy visiting us in the town. As we are living in the 3rd biggest settlement of the country, here everything proves to be quite handy. Personally I feel, there would be no point in living in a very small village as busier life appeals to me. But again, it is a matter of taste, isn’t it?
