Practical Everyday English-Lesson 1
I have recently come across a good book titled as Practical Everyday English by Steven Collins, which wants to make the advanced student memorise new expressions. In order to do so, I have decided to write a short story with most of the phrases that every single lesson contains. Hopefully, this task will function as a mnemonic.
Cooking
I normally wake up at 6:30 as my husband’s alarm clock goes off at 6:15. At around 6:45, I put my trousers on and I do my cardigan up. As I have quite a number of household chores, I start cooking at 7:00 before my baby gets up. I have to tell you that I don’t really enjoy cooking every day, but this is one of the tasks that mothers have to do, right? I know that many people opt for ordering from take-away restaurants or any kind of canteens, but I think that they are probably much better off than we are. Anyway, it seems ages since I was last at a restaurant but I don’t mind it.
Cooking at home is a bit tiresome activity, but it has also considerable advantages such as it is definitely cheaper if bigger portions are made, and it can be healthier if you know where the ingredients come from. Thanks be to God, we are not fussy eaters at all, my baby daughter is not choosy either, which is actually really good news, I guess. Not to mention my hubby, he is absolutely not picky when it comes to food. We try to pay attention to our eating habits, in spite of the fact that sometimes we fail and we are occasionally tempted by the savoury taste of junk food. We generally don’t eat quite a bit of bread, just one or two tiny slices daily, so when I buy a little loaf of wholemeal bread, it usually gets stale after a few days. So I suppose we might as well neglect bread completely from our diet as it usually goes off at our home. And we’d be better off doing it. As for my daughter, she particularly enjoyed eating a roll with some sausage for breakfast but she has gone off it lately somehow. Her taste might have changed a bit.
Actually, I am said to be a pretty good cook, but admittedly, there are days when I feel I don’t manage to make anything tasty. Fortunately, my husband doesn’t make a fuss about it as he can cook and knows that it is not that easy to come up with something palatable every day. As for our kitchen, I like it very much. It was done up about a decade ago. It is not particularly big but it has everything that we need.
